TESL Night 2008 POSTPONED! – Can you believe it?
Weeee….it was quite a relief when I knew that this big occasion was being postponed because of the lack preparation done and of course money matters! I was lucky, at the moment, because I am the Royal Secretary…haha, funny isn’t it? First time being appointed to be a secretary for a big occasion like this makes me nervous and worry about almost everything regarding to the event.
Bad news is that I had to hold the position for next semester and the good news is I can collect more certificates. These certificates in the end will help me to get a good job and it surely certifies me that I can DO work that have been given to me.
The theme for this coming TESL Night is *A Fairytale to Remember*. Some of the Teslites think that this theme is not quite suitable because there is one award to be given to students who wear the best costume that night will be the “King and Queen of the Night”. What made this theme is not suitable is that people will tend to wear different types of costume. Not all will be wearing gowns and dresses, suit and ties… Some of them will wear witch costume, animal characters and maybe even fairies which are not in the category of prince and princess. And some suggest that Teslites should just enjoy the night and let the students from other faculty to do the performances. And for table bookings the people who booked it should pay it in advance for the whole table.
Hurm…seems like that we need to do a lot of improvement for the event. Handling a program is not as easy as it seem even for the smallest event. It requires a lot of hard work and cooperation from everybody. I’ve been involved in a few campus activities but I still have a lot to learn. I have been in the food bureau, activity bureau, registration bureau, secretary for two times and a few times that I have been approached to be a project manager but I refused because I think that I still have more to learn and I’m not ready or prepared yet for the big tasks. It’s not about being afraid of the challenge, I am just afraid of failure from lack of experience and revisions to do the job. I want that if I had to handle an event, I want it to happen rather smoothly with only a few small problems or no problems at all if possible.
Well, back to our main discussion… It is about the hard work that I had to go through while making this event a reality. Believe it or not, I had to do the paperwork (proposal) to get permission and approval from our dean. You know what, it’s not as simple as copying other event’s proposal and just do a little bit of editing. It is more than that. Every event has different specifications in its paperwork. So, we need to do a thorough consideration in all aspect and make a draft before writing the proposal. Drafts is meant to be corrected and edited and believe me, you’ll have a good chance of re-doing the editing of it thousands of times before making a real proposal. What’s more is that I had to consult Mr. Mus, our lecturer who’s very well-known for being a perfectionist, and there were a lot of mistakes that I’ve done. From there I realize that making a good proposal is a critical task and I really need to read more English literature in order to improve my writing. I lost count upon seeing Mr. Mus in doing the task.
